Property management is not an easy career to be in, so today we are talking about some tips for how to stay calm when you’re under pressure.
Acknowledge Your Emotions
When you’re being triggered, just take a second to notice your emotions. Notice that you’re getting frustrated or angry and take a breath.
Change Perspective
You may want to change your perspective and ask what is really going on here. Put yourself in the shoes of the person who happens to be opposite you.
Never Take Things Personally
I am always advising my staff not to take things personally. Most conflicts are never about you. Moving is stressful and the property management business requires us to deal with a lot of people who are under stress. You cannot take it personally.
Positive Intent
Look at the other person with positive intent. They aren’t there to tell you how to do your job, but they are sharing their experience with you. Be open to that.
Stay Organized
Organize yourself. You need blocks of time in your schedule to allow for things to come up. It’s important to give yourself the space you need to deal with those things. If you’re worrying about the other appointments that you have because your schedule is crammed, you’re just going to have more stress.
Always Listen
Listen. Don’t interrupt when people are talking to you. Give them the opportunity to say what they need to say and then repeat things back to them, just so you are clear about the problem or the situation. Make sure you understand what they’re saying. A lot of times, people just want to be heard.
Once people give me feedback, I personally always like to do a handwritten note back to that person thanking them for sharing thoughts, perspectives and feedback. I include information on how I’m going to incorporate what they’ve said, or I assure them that we’re going to do better in the future.
